The French squad had a great reception in their country, getting the runner-up in Qatar 2022. The fans gathered in the Place de la Concorde to see and celebrate with their idols who, four years earlier, had achieved glory.
However, on social networks, many Frenchmen did not see the reason for the celebration and vented their frustration on the players. Mbappé, Coman, Kolo-Muani and Tchouameni were the main targets and received constant racist attacks,
Many of the attacks were directed towards the greatest exponent of French football, Kylian Mbappé. It was not enough for him to be a figure of the match and score a ‘hat-tick’. He was one of those pointed out, and the emojis of monkeys and bananas flooded his social networks.
Kingsley Coman was in charge of executing France’s second penalty; however, he was the first to fail. His shot, although it was powerful, did not have the right direction for the ball to beat the gloves of ‘Dibu’ Martínez. Showered with insults, Bayern Munich came out to support the 26-year-old winger.
Kolo-Muani had a one-on-one chance with the Argentine goalkeeper in the final minutes of extra time, but the shot was blocked by Martínez. Tchouameni also missed the penalty entrusted to him. Actions that were not forgiven by some “misfits” and did not hesitate to insult them because of their skin color.
The attacks received during the last hours forced some players to temporarily close their profiles on social networks. Although, then they would reopen the accounts, but with moderate comments.
The French Football Federation also ruled on these unpleasant comments and assured that it will take action against the authors.
“Following the World Cup final, several French team players were the subject of unacceptable racist and hateful comments on social media. The FFF condemns them and will file a complaint against their authors”, can be read in the publication of the entity.
