Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that an injury he sustained during a second-round match at the Australian Open the day before will take six to eight weeks to recover.
“I had medical checkups after my defeat yesterday (Wednesday). MRI revealed a second-degree lesion of the iliopsoas muscle of the left leg. Now I’m going to rest and do some anti-inflammatory therapy. The normal recovery time is 6-8 weeks,” the Spaniard wrote on his Twitter account.

This absence could jeopardize his participation in the US spring tour with the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells (March 8-19) and Miami (March 22-April 2).
Reigning champion Nadal wanted to finish his match in the second round of the Australian Open, losing on Wednesday to American Mackenzie McDonald (6-4, 6-4, 7-5), despite the pain “in the left thigh” that prevented him “from backhand games and runs,” he admitted.
He hinted that the rest of his career may depend on the severity of this injury and the time it takes to recover.
The Majorcan, 36, did not announce his intentions on Thursday.
