Murray and why he is today the best example of what tennis means

Year 2019. Australia. Andy Murray, through tears, announced his retirement from professional tennis. A deformity in the head of the femur constantly collided with the cavity that houses it and the wear of the articular cartilage became unbearable. It was Roberto Bautista Agut who beat him in that supposed last dance four years ago.

But the Scotsman, as we have been accustomed to over the years, decided to continue fighting. Andy Murray had a metal resurfacing prosthesis placed on his femur so that he could once again compete at the highest level.

While his limitation is evident and we probably won’t see a version of Murray like the one that won him his three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals again, it’s wonderful to see him advancing in the same tournament where he 4 years ago. he was about to kick the board.

As if bad luck had not been enough for the Briton, the draw for the tournament put a very big stone in his way in the first round: Matteo Berrettini. After pushing himself to the limit for nearly five hours, Murray won the match in five sets saving a match point down.

In the second round, Sir Andy gave us one of the best crosses in recent times. The rival was the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis and the situation couldn’t be more uphill: two sets down and 5-2 down in the third round. Far from giving up, Murray once again gave us a lesson in self-esteem and took the match for 5 hours and 45 minutes (the second longest game in the history of the tournament).

Yesterday it was, as in 2019, Roberto Bautista Agut who was in charge of putting an end to Murray’s journey in Australia, but, this time, the epilogue of the Scotsman’s career looks further away than before.
