Crisis in FFR: Patrick Buisson’s candidacy for president rejected, Bernard Laporte disavowed

Bernard Laporte’s page will soon be handed over to the French Rugby Federation. In any case, this is a new warning shot at the pinnacle of French rugby, the implications of which will be scrutinized less than 8 months before the World Cup in France (September 8 – October 28).

Convicted last December for corruption and influence peddling, Bernard Laporte, who was not removed from his position as FFR president until his appeal was heard, finally agreed to step down under pressure. And he nominated his vice president, Patrick Buisson, for vice president.

Difference less than 200 votes

This appointment was put to the vote of the presidents of amateur clubs from Monday to Thursday. It was finally rejected by 51% after a consultation that concluded on Thursday at noon. “After counting the votes by the technical service provider under the control of the bailiffs, the final result, confirmed by the president of the Federal Rugby Ethics and Professional Conduct Committee, is as follows: in favour: 4097 votes (48.94%); Against: 4,275 votes (51.06%),” the message sent to the clubs reads.

Therefore, the appointment of Patrick Buisson, proposed by Bernard Laporte, is rejected. This is another renunciation by Bernard Laporte. There is still no boss at the head of French rugby. The FFR Steering Committee is scheduled for tomorrow Friday at Marcoussis. Sports Minister Amélie Oudea-Castera planned to invite herself there. Two scenarios are possible: the appointment of a new deputy chairman as part of the current team. But given the outcome of that consultation, it’s hard to imagine a member of the Laporte clan taking part in the vote again. Or, what do the opponents of the incumbent FFR president want, the organization of new general elections at the head of the Federation.
