With both Pedri and Gavi absent for Barcelona on Thursday night, manager Xavi has hinted that Sergi Roberto will take part in Manchester United’s game at Old Trafford.

Pedri was injured in the first leg at Camp Nou, while a yellow card in the second half means Gavi is suspended for the trip to England.

Club legend Sergio Busquets has recovered from injury and will move to midfield, while it looks like Sergi Roberto will also be in midfield after scoring the opener in Sunday’s 2-0 La Liga win over Cadiz.

“He’s a guarantee, he always gets it right,” Xavi told Sport about the 31-year-old. “I’m sure he will be important, he can play in multiple positions.”

There are plans for the second leg at Old Trafford after the first leg in Barcelona ended 1-1. Xavi said: “I’ve already made up my mind, but the idea won’t change.

“We have to occupy the spaces, we are a very attacking team. We have to understand the game. It is a game to show that Barca can compete in Europe.

“The difference is that we don’t have to counter so much with midfielders, it depends on how the game goes.”

Roberto has spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, making his debut in 2010 and making over 300 appearances for the Catalan giants in defense and midfield.

Never one of the stars of the team, but the Spaniard is eager to put the Europa League title on his resume, having already won six La Liga and two Champions Leagues.

United manager Erik ten Hag said of Barca’s absence of two key players this week: “Gavi and Pedri are big, great players, even though they are very young. They had a positive impact, but their team also has so much depth.

“They have players to replace them and will be a very good team tomorrow. If we want to win, we have to do our best.”
