There are even Colombians and Peruvians who come to Río Hondo on their motorcycles. The rest of the foreigners, mainly from neighboring countries, arrive mostly by air.

And there are some 4,000 visitors who travel from Europe and the United States, mostly members of the competition teams, the organization of the event and the sponsors.

“Termas de Río Hondo has 14,000 hotel beds that are transformed into 22,000, with alternative accommodations that are opened especially for this event. There is also accommodation in San Miguel de Tucumán and in the city of Santiago del Estero. In total, they add up to around 50,000 places for people who come from abroad,” Sosa said.

The profile of foreign visitors is “that of motorcycle fans under 40, a segment with high purchasing power,” he said.

To them are added the thousands of Argentines who arrive, mainly, from the provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Córdoba, with a deep-rooted love for motor sport.

This crowd, Sosa points out, floods the city “with the spirit of motorcycles.” And it is that around the MotoGP massive and unique meetings of “motorcycle riders” are generated, as lovers of motorcycles and the culture of two wheels are called in Argentina.

“From days before the event they begin to arrive and the city is transformed with the fanatic bars of Suzuki, Ducati or Yamaha. Musical shows are organized around these meetings. And at the racetrack there is a ‘fan zone’, with motorcycle and aerial stunts”, said Sosa.

Many of the foreigners who attend MotoGP later visit other tourist destinations in northern Argentina.

In Río Hondo, the national capital of thermal tourism, they also enjoy other natural attractions and its unique Automobile Museum, which houses an outstanding collection of classic motorcycles. In addition to MotoGP, the Río Hondo racetrack has been a bivouac in the 2015 and 2016 Dakar Rally.

“Santiago del Estero has become a reference in sports tourism due to the infrastructure and the events that it has captured in recent times,” said Sosa.

The province hosted the Hockey Pro League last December; a week ago it hosted a PGA Tour Latinoamérica tournament; next Tuesday it will receive the Argentine soccer team, champion in Qatar 2022, for a friendly against Curaçao; and in September it will host the world BMX tournament.
