Lima 42K: the race that seeks to fight against deforestation suffered by the Shipibo community in Ucayali

Last Thursday, April 20, the press conference for the adidas marathon was held, Cereals Angel Lima 42Kin the facilities of the Municipality of Miraflores.

During the event, the objectives and details of the production of this new edition were presented, which will be run on May 21 and will have Miraflores as the starting point, and the polo shirt and official medal of the race were exhibited for the first time. The conference was led by Guillermo Byrne, Marketing Director adidas Peru, Alejandra Rodríguez Larraín, General Manager of Peru Runners and Lima 42K Race Director, Efraín Sotacuro, elite athlete and adidas ambassador, in addition to the participation of Joanna Boloña as moderator. The panel also had the participation of Carlos Canales, mayor of Miraflores, who mentioned that it is very important for his district to host this international-class race, since it allows them to continue working to be a benchmark district at the sports level and thus distance the youth of addictions.

During the conference, it was announced that all participants will have the opportunity to compete alongside great national and international running figures. Running is a democratized sport that allows runners with an amateur, intermediate and elite level to coexist in the same space. Sponsors such as Efraín Sotacuro, Sofia Mamani, Aydee Loayza, René Champi, Nelson Ito will be running that day, as well as foreign elite guests such as Abigael Jepkemboi, winner of the Lima Marathon last year, Girma Bekele, who ranked third in the New York Marathon and Iván Gonzalez, Colombian elite athlete, among others.

“We are witnesses of the great evolution that the event has compared to last year and that makes us very satisfied. We expect around 16,000 participants who will have the opportunity to participate in a fun event, with many outdoor activities to share with the family. We believe that events like this allow us to reaffirm our commitment to celebrate all the people who run and who have made the impossible possible,” said Byrne of adidas.

For the first time this year, the marathon will host the National Marathon Championship, which is backed by the Peruvian Athletics Federation. In addition, the 42K and 21K routes are certified by World Athletics and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

“On the sustainability side, the race has a Carbon Neutral certification, which means that all the carbon emissions that are made in the event will be neutralized with a positive project. For example, last year it was “Fight against deforestation” suffered by areas surrounding the Shipibos in Ucayali and more than 6,000 trees were planted,” says Alejandra Rodríguez Larraín, General Manager of Peru Runners and Director of the Lima 42K Race.

“This year, we hope to have a project of the same magnitude and in parallel we have, thanks to recycle LATAM, a recycling program for glasses and bottles and last year we almost reached one ton. We hope to do it this year to achieve a green certification”, he added.

The first event called “Carbon Neutral” in Peru was NatGeo, which was held 10 years ago and sustainability was applied. Likewise, the ‘Lima Half Marathon’ also has a recycling program similar to 42K. What is sought here in Peru is to surpass the “Mexico Marathon”, which has many sustainability efforts and lead with this issue in the region.

In addition, the runners will have the opportunity to use the official shoes, the new adizero adios pro 3, with which Evans Chebet has just won the famous Boston marathon. “The adizero adios pro 3 are designed to offer maximum speed and empower the runner, thanks to their technology energyrods that allow better propulsion and greater comfort thanks to the double layer of Lightstrike Pro foam” mentions Guillermo Byrne.

Efraín Sotacuro, an elite athlete, was present at the conference to announce his participation in the 21K modality and comment on his training routine, which allows him to set goals and meet them.

It is very important to emphasize that registration for the marathon will only be available until Sunday, April 30 through the website https://lima42k.com.pe/ and there are few places left available.
