Peruvian Gonzalo Quirhuayo Chumbe wins a gold medal in the Pan American University Chess Championship

Peruvian chess continues to checkmate in international tournaments. The International Masters Gonzalo Quirhuayo Chumbe won the title of the 2023 Pan American University Chess Championship, which was held in virtual mode a week ago.

Gonzalo, a student at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, led the national supremacy, since Peruvian chess players also achieved the other places on the podium. Meanwhile, Iván Soriano and Renzo Rengifo, also from San Marcos, achieved second and third place, while Marco Delgado, from the University of Applied Sciences (UPC), was fourth.

On the other hand, in the female category, Mayra Raymundo, from the University of Piura (UDEP), won the silver medal.

Outstanding

Quirhuayo has been dedicated to chess since he was seven years old, when his parents decided to enroll him in a summer course. Now 21, he is a confirmed talent, while he is dedicated to studying law at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.

He has been an International Master since he was in the fifth year of high school and then he has been crowned for three consecutive years as National University Champion, the last of which was achieved in 2022.

He carries a history of titles in his school stage as part of the seedbed of the Saco Oliveros School. At the age of 8, in 2010, he won the Pan American and repeated in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Meanwhile, in the 2013 Slovenian Chess World Cup he won the silver medal, and in the Absolute School World Cup he won the gold in the blitz category and another bronze in Brazil.
