Diego Maradona’s Cuban ex-girlfriend: “I couldn’t say no, it was a privilege to be with him”

Diego Maradona had a relationship with Mavys Álvarez at the beginning of the year 2000, when the Argentine star, now deceased, was in Cuba to treat his drug addiction. The ‘Pelusa’ was for some seasons in Havana. At the time, Mavys was still 16 years old.

In an interview for the América TV channel in Miami, Mavys told details of how he met Diego Maradona: “A Cuban suggested that I accompany Diego. He and another person spent more than an hour convincing me that it was important to help Diego, that he was a world figure, a friend of Cuba and that he was depressed. And I finally accepted”.

“Guillermo Esteban Coppola, a friend of Maradona’s, received me at the hotel. There I was very scared because I was in a towel and I thought the worst. A few minutes later Maradona greeted me. He talked a lot with me and gave me confidence. I liked him. He never went overboard. The next day he invited me and my family to dinner at the Dupont Palace “added.

According to Mavys, it was a luxury to be with Diego, because he could have access to many things that were denied to Cubans and it was only accessible to tourists: “I was a child. He had no evil at all. He was a foreigner, a rich man, and he had noticed me. I couldn’t say no. It was a privilege to be his girlfriend”.

After more than 20 years since they met, the Cuban also said that Diego took her through the world of drugs, from which she can only emerge after many years of constant struggle.

“Life with Maradona was very crazy: parties, discos. He took me out to eat. I never imagined that later I would get into the drugs that I had so hard to get out of”, Finished the ex-partner of Diego Maradona.
