“I see a growing team” and “it is the acid test”: What do the journalists who follow the Bicolor think about Peru vs Canada?

A few hours after Peru plays against Canada in Kansas City for the second date of the group stage of the America Cup, there is more and more conviction that if there is a rival to beat, it is the North American team. In order not to take out the calculator and play with the mathematics, a victory against the Canadians paves the way to the quarterfinals of the national team tournament.

El Comercio spoke with Jampool Cuadros, Pablo Ocaña, Jesús Arias and Jason Sánchez, four Peruvian journalists who, from the United States, follow the path of the ‘blanquirroja’ in this competition day by day and who, after a goalless match against Chile, They already have an idea of what the destiny of the team could be based on their football performance.

Jampool Pictures (America Television):

“The result of their debut against Chile has been key and positive to continue believing in the classification to the extent that this Copa América marks a new process for Peru and stealing a point from that rival considering the fixture that was coming up, was valuable. After that first step, I think the key game will be against Canada. If we win, I consider Peru to put a foot and a half in the classification to the next phase. I see a Peruvian team growing and that is the main cushion and strength of this group, in addition to the unity and belief in a coach like Jorge Fossati who has motivated them and is compacting them. This is seen on a daily basis.”.

Pablo Ocaña (Latina Sports):

“I think the Peruvian team can do well in this Copa América. After the Chile game we had the feeling that some details were corrected, that we have improved a lot from the defensive aspect and, from there, try to hurt the rival. Yes there is a pending debt and it is to be more forceful, finalize the situations and decide better in the last meters of the field. Canada is a very physical rival, it can make Peru enter more into friction and not so much into a played match. But the national team has shown that, starting from the tactical order, it can compete and complicate any rival.”

Jason Sánchez (ATV): ”I think the footballers are understanding Jorge Fossati’s idea game by game. The most notable and evident thing is the defensive solidity. I believe that the match against Canada will mark the team’s destiny in this Copa América and everything will depend on it doing a task that, until now, it has not accomplished: being effective. So far we have had few clear elaboration moves and, when we have had them, they have not been taken advantage of. If that doesn’t improve, it will be very difficult for him to enter the second stage. “Canada is the litmus test.”

Jesús Arias (RPP News): In order to fight for a classification you have to play a match against Canada and try to overcome it. They are a physically very strong team and more important than Chile, but in terms of football I think Peru can find arguments to harm them; However, these have not been presented in a sustained manner. Although defensively we have shown ourselves well, offensively there is not a good performance reflected on the field. We need that to be able to try to beat Canada and with that get into the next phase. I believe that it is possible, that we can find the offensive quota that we needed against Chile. Defensively, Canada presents its main weakness and from that we can move forward in the game.”

Peru vs. Canada, the previous

The match between both teams will be played at Children Mercy Park in Kansas City starting at 5:00 pm. This sports venue is the stadium of Sporting Kansas, a team that competes in the Western Conference of Major League Soccer in the United States, and has a capacity of approximately 18,500 people. As for the weather, it is predicted that the game will be played in quite hot conditions, since although it will not reach 38 degrees last Monday, it will be around 35 and 36.

In this regard, it should be noted that Children Mercy Park is not one of the air-conditioned stadiums participating in the Copa América; That is, it does not have air conditioning that can suppress high temperatures. Therefore, it has been established that there is a hydration minute. For his part, Jorge Fossati already has the eleven confirmed and, beyond the absence due to injury of Luis Advíncula, he does not think about making major changes than what he presented against Chile in Dallas. That is, Peru would start with Gallese; Araujo, Zambrano, Callens; Polo, Cartagena, Peña, Quispe, López, Flores and Lapadula.
