The Peruvian managed to prevail in a match lasting more than two hours, in which it was complicated at the beginning. Nicolás started by losing the first set, but managed to recover and in the next two set he won.

Álvarez, who is part of the Davis Cup team, had defeated Bolivian Zeballos by a resounding 2-0 in the previous round and had also left Colombian Nicolás Barrientos on the road with 2-1 sets.

The Guayaquil Challenger is a competition that takes place on clay. The competition has been played since 2005 and so far no Peruvians have managed to lift the trophy.

The furthest Peruvian rackets went were in the 2005 and 2016 seasons. The first with Luis Horna and Iván Miranda partnering in doubles. They fell in the final against the pair made up of the Argentine Juan Manuel del Potro and the Costa Rican Juan Antonio Marín.

The most recent was with Sergio Galdós, who paired with the Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo. They both lost in the final to Ariel Behar from Uruguay and Fabiano de Paula from Brazil.
