The qualifiers began in the Davis Cup 2021. Nicolás Álvarez and Conner Huertas del Pino had their first day in the ‘Knockouts’ against Romania and the results were not what they expected. The Peruvian tennis players were defeated 2-0 at the BT Arena Multipurpose Hall in Cluj Napoca.

Nicolás Álvarez was the first to participate. The Peruvian played against Nicolae Frunza and lost in straight sets, in one hour and 16 minutes of play. Despite the fact that ‘Nico’ arrived with a better ranking (392 °), the local (626 °) imposed his game to give the Romanian squad the starting point.

On the second single of the day, favorite Marius Copil extended the lead over the Peruvian team. The current 274th ATP defeated Conner Huertas del Pino (399th) in straight sets after just over an hour of play. The first set was close; however, in the second round, the Romanian managed to break the Peruvian and win the match.

Sunday morning (4:30 am) will begin the second day of competition with doubles. Sergio Galdos and Arklon Huertas del Pino will prepare to try to extend the series against Marius Copil and Horai Tecau, ranked 17th in the ATP doubles ranking.

If the fourth game is played, Nicolás Álvarez will collide with Marius Copil. And if the series is extended to a fifth duel, the definition will be between Nicolae Frunza and Conner Huertas del Pino. It should be noted that the main Peruvian leader, Juan Pablo Varillas, did not make it to the series due to a rib injury.
