Djokovic denied knowing about his positive for COVID-19 before participating in some events

The controversy surrounding the situation of the Serbian Novak Djokovic remains, but this time the tennis player decided to speak publicly. The Serbian used his social networks to share details about the activities he carried out during the month of December and assured that he did not know of his positive result for coronavirus when he attended some meetings. This is the letter the athlete sent:

“I want to address the ongoing misinformation about my activities and attendance at events in December in the lead up to my positive COVID-19 PCR test result.

This is misinformation that needs to be corrected, in particular in order to alleviate the wider community concern about my presence in Australia, and to address issues that are very hurtful and concerning to my family.

I want to emphasize that I have gone to great lengths to ensure everyone’s safety and my compliance with testing obligations.

I attended a basketball game in Belgrade on December 14, after which several people were reported to have tested positive for COVID 19. Despite having no COVID symptoms, on December 16 I had a rapid antigen test which was negative. , and out of an abundance of caution, I also had an official PCR test that same day. The next day I attended a tennis event in Belgrade to present awards to the children and had a rapid antigen test before going to the event, and it came back negative. I was asymptomatic and feeling fine, and had not received notification of a positive PCR test result until after that event.

The next day, December 18, I was at my tennis center in Belgrade to fulfill a long-standing engagement for a L’Equipe interview and photo shoot. I have canceled all other events except for the L’Equipe interview.

I felt compelled to go ahead and conduct the interview, as I did not want to disappoint the journalist, but made sure to be socially detached and wear a mask except when my picture was taken.

As I went home after the interview to isolate myself for the required period, reflecting, this was an error in judgment and I accept that I should have rescheduled this engagement. “

In the same way, Novak Djokovic referred to everything he experienced on his arrival in Australia, by not presenting the proper information about his vaccination against COVID-19 and using a medical exemption:

“On the subject of my travel statement, this was submitted by my support team on my behalf – as I told the immigration officials upon my arrival – and my agent sincerely apologizes for the clerical error in checking the wrong box about from my previous travel before coming to Australia. This was human error and certainly not deliberate. We are living in difficult times in a global pandemic and sometimes these mistakes can occur. Today my team has provided additional information to the Australian Government to clarify this issue.

While I felt it was important to address and clarify the misinformation, I will not comment further out of the utmost respect for the Australian Government and its authorities and the current process.

It is always an honor and a privilege to play at the Australian Open. The Australian Open is beloved by players, fans and the community, not just in Victoria and Australia, but all over the world, and I just want the opportunity to compete against the best players in the world and perform against one. one of the best crowds in the world ”.
