Atlético Madrid desperately sought the tying goal against Athletic Club de Bilbao, in the semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup, in the last minute and Diego Simeone sent his central defenders into the rival area. The Uruguayan José María Giménez arrived with the intention of scoring, but ended up being the protagonist of a hard foul against Íñigo Martínez.

Despair had taken over the ‘Colchonero’ squad, after the comeback they suffered, with the goals of Yeray Álvarez (77 ′) and Nico Williams (81 ′). However, despite the little time left, they did not lower their arms and went out aggressively to seek equality, to cause the extension.

Because of this, Diego ‘Cholo’ Simeone ordered the tallest players to go to the opposite area, with the aim of taking advantage of some aerial ball. In this way, José María Giménez and Renan Lodi appeared in front of the goal protected by the goalkeeper Unai Simón, waiting for a precise center.

Finally, at 93 ′, the Mexican Héctor Herrera found spaces near the crescent and sent the ball towards the penalty spot. The qualification was not very good and Giménez was forced to perform a dangerous maneuver to finish off the goal: he jumped and raised his right leg, as if he were going to perform a karate kick.

However, the Uruguayan defender arrived late and ended up hitting the sole of his booty against the face of Íñigo Martínez, who had cleared the ball. The referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández observed the scene and initially sanctioned with a yellow card, but received a call from the VAR and, after the analysis, the defender was expelled.
