Google unveils the Pixel Watch and Pixel 6a, and teases the Pixel 7 and a tablet

The Pixel family is growing, and Google’s hardware ambitions with it. On the occasion of its major conference for Google I / O developers on Wednesday, the Mountain View giant unveiled half a dozen new devices. Smartphones, watches, headphones, tablets… Google wants to find a place between Apple and Samsung.

The Pixel Watch, a watch with a successful design

In eight years, Google has never succeeded in imposing WearOS against the Apple Watch. So much so that Samsung had switched to its in-house system, Tizen OS. But after the great reunification started with the Galaxy Watch 4, Google finally draws its house watch, the Pixel Watch. The rounded design, with curved edges, is particularly successful. It remains to be seen what health/fitness functions will be integrated after the takeover of FitBit, and especially if WearOS will finally offer apps at the level. The Pixel Watch will be launched in the fall, and we will have to wait, probably until Google’s October conference, to find out the price.

The Pixel 6a, the mid-range smartphone at the right price

It has become a tradition, manufacturers draw a mid-range model in the middle of the cycle. Unsurprisingly, the Pixel 6a looks a lot like the Pixel 6 but will cost $200 less. You have to make some sacrifices (a 12.2 megapixel photo sensor instead of 50, a 60 Hz screen and not 90, and a back made of composite materials instead of glass). But at 459 euros, it could appeal to a wide audience by offering many in-house features (Magic eraser, interpreter, recorder) at an aggressive price, in a slightly more compact format (6.1″). The Pixel 6a will be available on July 28, and on pre-order on July 21.

The Pixels 7 and 7 Pro are revealed

Google teased it by unveiling the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, which will launch in the fall with Android 13. premium.

The Pixel Buds Pro, headphones with active noise reduction

The race with Apple and Sony continues. Google’s next high-end earphones switch to active noise reduction, with a processor dedicated to this task, and multipoint Bluetooth, which allows them to be used with several devices (smartphone, PC) without interruption. They will be available in France (also on July 28) at 219 euros.

A slightly dated Pixel tablet

After stopping the fees, Google is trying its luck again on the shelves. After the Pixel C in 2015 then the Pixel slate in 2018, here is the Pixel tablet. It will not be released until 2023, and the silhouette, with large borders, does not really make you dream, even if Android seems to take better advantage of the big screen this time. Google is still struggling to find the missing link between smartphones and Chromebooks.
