Could the Lightning port on the iPhone soon be over? In any case, this is what Ming-Chi Kuo, a “generally well-informed” analyst suggests, according to BFM Business. On Twitter, he said that Apple would like to replace the Lightning port with the USB-C port, which equips Android smartphones but also iPads and MacBooks.

The Lightning port made its appearance in 2012 with the iPhone 5, replacing the old very large 30-pin charger. Its advantages: its speed in terms of data transfer, its ease of use and the fact that it can be connected in both directions.

But the Lightning port quickly began to be singled out. The main reason ? Its low charging speed compared to that of the USB-C port, which is widely used on most devices. According to our colleagues, Apple would have decided all these years to keep the Lightning port because of the significant income related to commissions collected on accessories using this technology and sold by third parties.

In addition, the release date of the iPhone 15 with USB-C port, at the end of 2023, could coincide with an obligation to harmonize with European standards imposed on Apple. The American giant is indeed summoned to align itself with the competition and to respond to economic and ecological prerogatives. The deadline is set for 2024.
