BMW will invest millions in Austria to manufacture electric motors

German car manufacturer BMW will invest about 1,000 million euros in its plant in Steyr (west of Austria) to increase its production of electric motors from 2025, the company reported on Monday.

The German consortium plans to produce some 600,000 electric motors per year from 2025 and to develop a new generation of high-performance motors.

A total of 230 million euros will be allocated to the development, while another 730 million will help to expand the site, explained the general director of BMW Steyr, Alexander Susanek, at the presentation of the project.

By 2030, half of BMW’s 4,400 employees in Steyr will be working in the electric motor business.

Currently, the Steyr plant manufactures combustion engines for various BMW models and for Mini on a large scale, while it produces only casings for electric cars.

Although gasoline and diesel engines will continue to be an important part of production, BMW will bet more and more on electric vehicles, which by 2030 should reach 50% of the company’s total production.

To this end, the Austrian factory, which currently produces more than one million vehicles per year, will maintain its four assembly lines for combustion engines and add another two for the production of electric motors.

Thus, it will also be adapted to respond to the ban on the sale of diesel and gasoline cars in the European Union, a measure that will come into force in January 2035.
