Google develops sustainable technology with Earth Engine and Carbon Footprint

Google has shared the novelties of its technologies focused on the sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of organizations, with the commercial opening of Earth Engine and the arrival of Carbon Footprint in Workspace tools.

Google has made available for commercial use of Earth Engine, the tool for monitoring ecosystems and habitats on a planetary scale which since its launch in 2010 has been limited to scientists and non-governmental organizations.

Earth Engine uses data from “hundreds of satellites and other sources”, which it combines with cloud computing resources to “display timely, accurate, high-resolution and relevant information for decision-making”, as the company collects in a statement.

On the other hand, and regarding the measurement of the carbon footprint, The company has announced a trial program that gives customers access to historical and real-time data on their energy consumption, with the possibility of delimiting them at a regional and hourly level, to obtain an emissions profile. With it, he hopes to help them in their transition towards energy optimization and “carbon-free transactions”.

CarbonFootprint, a solution to know and measure the gross CO2 emissions generated by the companywill be extended next year to Workspace, while in Google Cloud, where it is currently available, an identity and access manager (IAM) will be implemented, where “non-technical” users will be able to find information about emissions linked to the organizations use of the cloud.

In addition, Google has announced two programs for clients with which they can participate in accelerating sustainability: Google Cloud Ready – Sustainability, with which they can achieve their objectives in this area with a series of proposed technologies; and Google Cloud Marketplace Sustainability Hub, which gives access to previously validated sustainability solutions.
