The electric cars are becoming more and more important all over the world. However, there is another technology that also generates less pollution than combustion vehicles. We talk about the hydrogen cars.

What is a hydrogen car?

Hydrogen car (Hyundai/)

Unlike an electric car, the hydrogen car has a fuel battery that is not recharged through a plug. Instead, it has hydrogen tanks that mix this gas with oxygen to generate the vehicle’s propulsion, as explained in the Web of Hyundai.

Its great advantage is that it can have the same autonomy as a conventional car without the need to plug in and with zero polluting emissions.

How does it work?

The hydrogen engine is powered by a fuel battery, which is installed at the front of the vehicle. The technical process is simple. In the fuel battery, a chemical reaction takes place between the hydrogen stored in the vehicle’s tanks and the oxygen that comes from outside. This reaction forms electricity to move the car and water vapor, which is the only thing that is expelled through the exhaust pipe. It also has a battery in which excess electricity is accumulated so that it can be used at any time.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Universe and on Earth. Although it is hardly found in free molecular form, it exists in numerous compounds such as water, and processes that include renewable energy can be used to obtain it.

An additional benefit of this technology is that it collects air from the environment, filters it, purifies it and expels it through the exhaust pipe. In this way, not only does it not pollute but it also cleans the air.

Another advantage that manufacturers point to in fuel cell vehicles compared to electric ones is the time for a full recharge. The brands ensure that it is normally close to five minutes, as detailed by Honda or Hyundai.

Recharging the hydrogen tank is a task that is practically identical to filling it with traditional fuels: it is done through a hose, which is sealed to the tank while the tank is being filled. Finally, the autonomy of this type of vehicle is very similar to that of fuel vehicles.
