The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has included the artificial intelligence as one of the main threats to the industry and copyright, along with pirated content and counterfeits.

The association, which watches over the rights of the music industry in the United States, highlights the threat of pirated content in the ‘Review of notorious markets for counterfeiting and piracy’, published in October.

And it includes a list of the main markets that “participate in the reproduction without a license, creation of derivative works, streaming and/or distribution/downloading or other unauthorized dissemination of sound recordings.”

It also refers to “high-quality” counterfeit CDs and vinyl made in China and Russia, which bear a strong resemblance to the real thing, and unauthorized compilations, which can sometimes be found on legitimate marketplaces like Amazon and eBay. .

However, these are not the only threats that the association has detected, since it dedicates a section to extractors and mixers based on artificial intelligence (AI)that is, digital services that use this technology to violate copyright.

“Supposedly using artificial intelligence (AI)extract, or rather copy, the vocals, the instrumentals, or some part of the instrumentals (a musical root) from a sound recording, and/or generate, master, or remix a recording so that it is very similar or almost as good as the reference tracks of selected and well-known sound recording artists, ”he details in his report.

The RIAA also notes that AI models are being released with artists’ music, without the right or authorization to do so, to “make unauthorized copies” of their work. And cites among some of these services Acapella-extractor, Remove-Vocals and Songmastr.
