Msheireb, the smart neighborhood that optimizes transport and energy resources | VIDEO

Msheireb is the almost unpronounceable name of the new center of the city of Doha, an area of contemporary architecture considered one of the smart most sustainable cities in the world with intelligent control centers for energy efficiency and regeneration, clean transport or automatic waste collection.

Its more than 100 buildings were designed under the premise of sustainable regeneration of resources and the use of technology to optimize transport and energy resources.

A Smart City model (in English ‘smart city’) with streets reminiscent of the most cutting-edge neighborhoods of other European cities or the United States, but designed to take advantage of solar energy or improve cooling and awnings that adapt to the intensity of light, in a country where high temperatures and lack of rain are its main challenges.

The Msheireb neighborhood is strategically located in the heart of Doha, next to the Souq Waqif souk. One of the main objectives of the project was to revitalize the city center without forgetting its roots, with which the most innovative architectural language coexists in harmony with the original Qatari heritage.

Behind the project is Msheireb Properties, a Qatari developer subsidiary of the Qatar Foundation, which invested nearly $5.5 billion in an agreement whose construction began in 2010 on an area covering 31 hectares.

It is a neighborhood built with sustainable materials, houses with windows and insulating walls, intelligent waste management, a system of underground tunnels to almost completely eliminate the traffic of commercial vehicles and cleaning vehicles on the surface, and streets designed to distribute the cold and that pedestrians always enjoy shade.

On the roofs, about 6,500 solar panels generate the necessary energy for the homes and another 1,400 produce hot water also with the energy of the sun. Innovations that make this neighborhood of Doha the world’s highest concentration of LEED-certified sustainable buildings within a city.

LEED is the most prestigious sustainable building certification in the world, promoted by the US Green Building Council organization. Msheireb has more than thirty platinum and 42 gold LEED certifications.

On the surface, a free electric tram with nine stops connects the neighborhood. Equipped with internet connectivity, it not only generates its own energy and is air-conditioned, but is also capable of filtering light to retain 90% of the sun’s heat, insulating the interior.

TECHNOLOGICAL SMART CITY

Msheireb was precisely the venue in March 2022 for the Smart City Expo in which representatives from more than 100 countries discussed the main challenges facing cities for the future in their fight to alleviate the effects of climate change in large cities and improve the quality of life.

Its streets are home to first-generation ecological technology with electric car charging stations, applications to digitize routine procedures such as controlling the location of your vehicle or the entrance to car parks and restaurants, automated waste collection or public Wi-Fi.

In addition, the neighborhood has a control room to record information in real time that manages the use of energy and mobility alerts with data collected with GPS thanks to the information provided by the nearly 10,000 cameras that operate in the area and guarantee safety.

This area also has tourist attractions, such as the Al-Eid mosque, the Msheireb Museums, to learn about the country’s history and legacy, or the M-7, a nursery for young designers and entrepreneurs with their own shop and unique design.

The heart of Msheireb is Barahat Square, the largest covered square in the Middle East at around 7,000 square meters and boasting the largest retractable roof in the region. This area is full of shops, restaurants and charming cafes around a patio equipped with an innovative system of cold water pools that cool the environment.

In Barahat, which in Arabic comes from the term ‘Al Baraha’ and can be translated as ‘the open place to socialize’, all kinds of events and shows take place, especially when the sun goes down and you can enjoy a system of intelligent lighting and sound that transforms the space into a magical place.
