Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has announced it will cut about 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce.

On Friday, Alphabet said it was making the cuts because the US company sees its longstanding position at the top of the technology sector threatened.

The cuts at Alphabet come days after Microsoft announced it would lay off 10,000 employees.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai told employees in a memo that the company had grown rapidly for better times but was now facing “a different economic reality”.

After reviewing its products, people and priorities, the tech giant has decided to cut jobs across all regions and technologies.

“The fact that these changes will affect the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that brought us here,” Pichai said.

“I am confident in the tremendous opportunity ahead of us because of the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI.”

Alphabet’s job cuts will impact teams across the company, including recruiting and some corporate functions, as well as some engineering and product teams.

Affected employees have already received an e-mail about this.

As layoffs occur globally, this will have an immediate impact on U.S. personnel, as the process will take longer in other countries due to local labor laws and practices.

Last month, Google issued a “Code Red” after being shocked by the capabilities of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, forcing its research, trust and security teams to focus on developing and launching new AI prototypes and product focus.

This will put it in competition with Microsoft, which is reportedly seeking a $1 billion stake in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
