Meta’s AI boss downplays ChatGPT ‘boom’: “It’s nothing revolutionary”

Meta’s AI head Yann LeCun claims that ChaGPT is not a artificial intelligence revolutionary. The developer also claimed that OpenAI, the creators of the chatbot, have not brought a breakthrough in the research field as other labs have.

In terms of underlying techniques, ChatGPT is not particularly innovative”, assured LeCun in a meeting with the press and executives through Zoom, collected by ZDNet. “It is nothing revolutionary, although that is how the public perceives it. It’s just, you know, it’s well put together, it’s very well done.”, he added.

LeCun also criticized the ChatGPT developers for presenting the chatbot as a breakthrough in the field of artificial intelligence. “OpenAI is not particularly an advance compared to the other labsabsolutely“, he pointed.

Meta’s head of AI argued that the technology used in the chatbot is not something unique to OpenAI. “It’s not just about Google and Meta, but about there are half a dozen startups that basically have very similar technology. I don’t want to say it’s not rocket science, but it’s really shared, I mean, there’s no secret behind it”, he indicated.

Likewise, LeCun remarked that this technology existed even before OpenAI was founded. “You should realize that ChatGPT uses transformer architectures that are pre-trained in this self-monitored manner. ANDSelf-supervised learning is something I have been advocating for a long time, even before OpenAI existed.”, he concluded.

ChatGPT has become a sensation nowadays. The OpenAI chatbot, which is publicly available for free, is one of the great innovations of recent months. Some have even made this AI pass college entrance exams.
