WatsomApp, the platform that uses artificial intelligence to prevent school bullying

The use of artificial intelligence has escalated several levels, one of them is to evaluate the behavior of people. WatsomApp is an example of this, since it is a web application built with the artificial intelligence IBM Watson that is capable of improving the coexistence between students in schools.

This tool, through the game, allows to know the way in which the students are related in the schools, so that the teachers can identify if any of the students suffers from some type of harassment or intimidation.

Narciso Lema, leader of the technical community of IBM Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia & LCR, explained that “The use of AI in school platforms is of great importance to record the behavior of all students. In this way, cases of bullying can be prevented or, on the contrary, detect a healthy coexistence in the classrooms”.

WatsomApp arrived in the country in Arequipa in 2018 and was extended to schools in Lima in mid-2019. After carrying out activities with this technological tool, teachers receive detailed reports on the data collected.

The platform project was born three years ago in Spain, and little by little its use was standardized until it reached Latin America.

According to its creators, WatsomApp includes three key lines: gamification, artificial intelligence and data. That is, the application collects information to have parameters of school coexistence in the class. Under this analysis, the patterns of behavior among students in the classroom are established.

“We must remember that no matter how complex technological resources are used, they must be adapted to the user. For example, in this case you work with children or young people, so you have to adapt the AI to collect the data without having to ‘invade’ the space of the students”Lema explains.

To start using the platform, you must first create an avatar with non-explicit questions on the subject of bullying, but which allow you to collect the necessary information. The latter would be one of the main reasons why the accompaniment of mental health professionals is needed. In the end, the games last between 30 and 40 minutes.

María Paz Sáenz, Clinical Psychologist with experience in the psycho-educational field, points out that “The accompaniment of a psychologist is necessary in these cases. Despite the idea that artificial intelligence will give the result without anyone’s help, the truth is that a professional is needed to evaluate the final conclusions and recommend the best alternatives to treat the problem”.

This exercise is applied three times a year to assess the state and then the evolution of school life. The final report of the AI goes to a control panel made up of the management and coexistence team to determine guidelines that must be applied in the classroom.

In addition, the use of this platform has been complemented in other countries with Q.bo robots, in charge of having a conversation of less than five minutes, alone, with minors.

It is a collaborative work between the technologies that are within our reach. On the one hand, we have the artificial intelligence platform that is in charge of recording the information and, on the other hand, we have some robots in charge of interacting with the students.”Lema added.

In Peru these companion robots are not yet used, but their use is expected to be standardized to help prevent bullying situations and, at the same time, get students to interact with technology in schools.
