A “photo” has won a contest in Australia, easily fooling the jury. The image was generated by a artificial intelligence and it was deliberately sent by its creators to see if it would pass the test. The study returned the prize, because it only wanted to know if the work of the AI would beat the rest of the participants.
“This week, we won a popular digiDirect photo contest by entering a drone shot of a couple of surfers at sunrise. ANDIt’s a beautiful picture, but it’s not real. It is the first award-winning AI-generated photography in the world”Absolutely Ai points out.

According to the AI developer studio, the reason was to know if, like ChatGPT does, their work could pass a test. “We did it to show that we are at a tipping point with artificially intelligent technology by passing the ultimate test.. Could an AI-generated image not only go unnoticed (no one who has seen the image ever felt anything out of the ordinary) but be awarded first prize by a photography expert? The answer is emphatically yes”, he adds.
The image was created with pixels from many other photographs on the internet. “Surfers in our image never existed. Neither is that particular beach or stretch of ocean. SIt is made up of an infinite number of pixels taken from infinite photographs that each and every one of us has uploaded online over the years.”, assures the study.

Even the pseudonym they used had a particular reason according to the image. “We participate in the photo contest named after Jan van Eyckethe same name as the 15th-century painter known for creating the most stolen work of art of all time”, indicates.
Absolutely Ai returned the prize, which was a AU$100 photo print voucher. The digiDirect contest is organized every week and has a different theme each time. To participate, you just have to live in Australia and use a camera to get the perfect image. The AI-generated photo won for the “Summer” theme.
