A robot lawyer using AI is being sued for not having a law degree

DoNotPay, a Californian startup that uses the artificial intelligence to provide legal advice, she has been sued by a law firm because her AI does not have a law degree, they said.

The company, which describes itself as The world’s first robot lawyer”, has been in force since 2015 and helps citizens manage their legal problems without the need to hire a lawyer. They only have to provide information through a chatbot and the company will take the necessary steps.

However, the class action lawsuit accuses DoNotPay for practicing law without having a license, which is considered a violation of the law.

Unfortunately for its clients, DoNotPay is not actually a robot, a lawyer, or a law firm. DoNotPay does not have a law degree, is not prohibited in any jurisdiction, and is not supervised by any attorney”, they argue.

As indicated in the lawsuit published by the Superior Court of the State of California, the plaintiffs seek that the robot lawyer stop offering legal services.

For his part, the founder of DoNotPay, Joshua Browder, has spoken through a tweet stating that those claims “have no merit” and promises to fight the lawsuit.
