The Chinese Internet search giant, Baidu, announced today that it will launch on March 27 its chatbot of artificial intelligence (IA), under the name of Ernie Bot, as a cloud service for users and companies.
Ernie Bot is a generative AI product based on a deep language model that can create texts in different scenarios such as literary creation, business writing, mathematical calculation, Chinese comprehension, and multimodal generation.

Baidu officially introduced Ernie Bot on March 16 at a press conference at its Beijing headquarters and showed some of its capabilities to the media.
According to Baidu, just a few hours after the presentation, the company received more than 75,000 requests to test the chatbot and more than 6,000 inquiries for business cooperation, the Yicai economic news portal reported Monday.
Baidu’s founder and CEO, Robin Li, said in the presentation last Thursday that Ernie Bot had “a lot of room for improvement” and that he hoped it could compete with ChatGPT, the model developed by the American OpenAI laboratory and supported by Microsoft.

Li acknowledged that the bar required to match ChatGPT was “very high” and that no other global manufacturer had yet achieved it.
Baidu’s research and development expenses in 2022 amounted to 21.4 billion yuan (3.1 billion dollars, 2.917 million euros), representing 22% of its revenue.
Baidu plans to use Ernie Bot to transform its search engine, by far the most used in China, as well as increase efficiency in the cloud, smart vehicles and smart home appliances, among other core businesses.
