Hundreds of thousands of BlackBerrys only have a few hours of life left. The Canadian brand has announced that it will decommission devices running the operating system OS on Tuesday, reports 01net.
The phones that will be officially inaccessible from tomorrow are therefore BlackBerry OS 7.1 and lower, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and lower.
Android models are not affected
Android phones are not affected by this shutdown. People with the affected models will no longer be able to call, send SMS, or reach emergency numbers. And this, whether they are connected by Wi-Fi or to the mobile network. Launched in 1999 and equipped with physical keyboards, BlackBerrys had met with great success at the end of the 2000s with, in particular, professionals.
Today, users who absolutely want to keep a physical keyboard, more practical for composing messages, can turn to two other Android models: the BlackBerry KEYone and the BlackBerry Key2 LE. These devices are designed and sold under license by the Chinese TCL. Problem: the latter has not renewed its partnership with the Canadian brand BlackBerry. The existence of these two substitution models is therefore also limited in time.
