The most pirated series of 2021 is “Wandavision”, ahead of “Loki” and “The Witcher”

Despite the sharp decrease in hacking habits in Europe in recent years, the practice continues to exist. Whether it is to save money or to access content unavailable in their country, piracy continues to attract Internet users around the world.

The TorrentFreak news site, devoted to news about torrents (a data transfer protocol often used by hackers), published a ranking of the most downloaded series on torrent sites using the BitTorrent protocol in 2021. This ranking shows what attracted Internet users the most, aside from official statistics.

Disney + and Netflix at the top of the ranking

Unsurprisingly, we see many famous faces. Five of the ten most popular series are Disney + exclusives. Wandavision (Disney +) takes the top spot and becomes the most downloaded torrent series of 2021. It is followed by Loki (Disney +) and by The Witcher (Netflix).

Then come three Disney + series, respectively in fourth, fifth and sixth positions, with Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye and What If… ?. You have to wait for seventh and eighth place to see series from other services appear with Foundation (Apple TV +) et Rick and Morty (Cartoon Network/Netflix/HBO Max). Enfin, Arcane (Netflix) et The wheel of time (Amazon Prime Video) finish this top 10.

A ranking that focuses on individual episodes

Strangely enough, series like Squid Game or The Bridgertons Chronicle are completely absent from the ranking, despite their great popular success. TorrentFreak explains this absence by the calculation method used to establish its ranking. The latter only takes into account the individual episodes, which gives an advantage to series broadcast episode by episode, compared to series whose season is published all at once. TorrentFreak indicates, however, that with a calculation this time centered on entire seasons, the Paper house of Netflix would take fifth place and Squid Game would also be in the top 10.

Finally, TorrentFreak notes that the ranking had previously been dominated for several years by Game of Thrones, but that the reign of the series ended with the end of its broadcast. Last year was the series The Mandalorian (Disney +) which had collected the title of the most downloaded series by torrent.
