- Xiaomi has just unveiled its new premium smartphone Mi 11 Ultra launched at 1199 euros.
- The Chinese manufacturer, which is one of the best sellers of smartphones in France with Apple and Samsung, wants to occupy the ground left free by Huawei, in indelicacy with the American authorities and deprived of Google’s services on its smartphones.
- Announced as the “best photo smartphone on the market” by the DxOMark lab, the Mi 11 Ultra adopts a design that may not be unanimous.
The Mi 11 are linked. After an ambitious Mi 11, Xiaomi unveiled its Mi 11 Ultra on May 4, the “best photo smartphone”, according to the French measurement lab DxOMark. The new high-end smartphone was presented in a somewhat unusual presentation, but which had the merit of originality. For Xiaomi, enough to assert its ambition, the quality of its products and, incidentally, drive the nail into the coffin of rival Huawei.
“Things” to show us
An appointment had therefore been made for 6 p.m. Xiaomi Mi-fans and a-Mis were invited to the video presentation of the brand’s novelties on May 4. On the invitation card, the word “Revelations”. A whole program which, in its course, had nothing to do with a classic press conference.
Instead, a film of almost Hollywood style, with actor and members of the French staff of Xiaomi having learned their text well. On the screen, Michael, whose phone has died. That’s good, Xiaomi has “things to show him” …
A strange 1.1 inch screen
Among these things, the Mi 11 Ultra, an “ultimate 5G smartphone that takes photos like the pros,” announces Yan Liu, CEO of Xiaomi France. Just that. Dedicated to those who create a lot of content, the new flagship of the Chinese brand is distinguished by its completely new look.
At the top of the rear shell of this 6.81 ” / 17.29 cm Amoled WQHD + screen smartphone (3200 x 1440 pixels) and 120 Hz is planted an imposing rectangular photo module.
In addition to its three photo sensors *, Xiaomi housed a tiny vertical 1.1 ” / 2.79 cm OLED display. The purpose of this is to permanently display the time, the battery level, and notifications. Simple gadget? A test will tell. More interesting: this screen also allows you to frame selfies that will be taken using the trio of rear sensors of the Mi 11 Ultra, a hitch that we imagine more efficient than the only 20 megapixel front sensor of the smartphone …
These presentations being made, the Xiaomi “Revelations” conference moved to the French measurement lab DxOMark. Located in Boulogne Billancourt, DxOMark aims to test, for manufacturers who pay them for this, their devices before they are marketed. And concerning the photo and the video, Etienne Knauer of DxO did not go by four ways: “the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra offers its users the best results in almost all areas (…) it is the best photo smartphone of the market “.
Suddenly, DxOMark gives the Mi 11 Ultra first place on its photo smartphone podium. By the way, Xiaomi has succeeded in terms of communication, by associating the praise of the independent lab with its presentation … Note, while waiting to be able to test the smartphone prodigy, that it has a 5x optical zoom, where its predecessor, the Mi 11 launched in February 2021, did not have one. And that it shoots in 4K video at 30 or 60 frames / second, but also in 8K at 24 frames / second.
By the way, Xiaomi takes the opportunity to make a thinly veiled allusion to Huawei hit by an American embargo, and the inability of this rival to offer Google services on its smartphones. “All the Playstore applications are available on the Mi 11 Ultra” reassures the director of Xiaomi France with his charming voice to Michael who can no longer take it so much he wants a new smartphone …
Other features parade: Android 11 is on board; the Snapdragon 888 processor too; the terminal is waterproof (IP 68 standard); it is weighted with a 5000 mAh battery which recharges from 0 to 100% wired (67 W charger supplied) or wireless. And it is equipped with a dual Harman Kardon speaker. This audio module, already known on the Mi 11, had disappointed us.
Already available at 1199 euros (256 GB / 12 GB), Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra comes to tickle competitors already well established in this price segment, such as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or the Oppo Find X III Pro which all have recognized qualities. While waiting to discover those of the last Xiaomi, the first comments on the networks question its rear module and its “breakthrough” design. The future will tell if Xiaomi has done well to break the codes.
* 50-megapixel main sensor (24mm equivalent; f / 1.9) + 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle (12mm; f / 2.2) + telephoto lens with 48-megapixel optical zoom (120mm; f / 2.4).
