Pakistan on Thursday lifted the ban in force against TikTok, banned for distributing “immoral and unethical” content. It was the second time that the app was banned in the country.

Authorities reversed their decision after TikTok pledged to take action. “The app promised us to filter and moderate the content,” said Jahanzeb Mehsud, an attorney with the Pakistan Telecommunications agency. TikTok welcomed this decision.

Internet the highly controlled media in Pakistan

In March, a Peshawar court ordered telecoms regulators to ban the app for showing videos deemed contrary to the country’s extremely conservative values. The Chinese application had already agreed to moderate content after a first and brief ban in October.

An adviser to the Prime Minister had accused the application of promoting “the exploitation, objectification and sexualization” of young girls. Free speech advocates have long criticized Pakistani authorities’ censorship and control of the Internet and the media. In 2020, YouTube had already been targeted by measures from telecommunications regulators.
