  • This is the first exercise of this type organized in France and in Europe, since the creation in 2017 of the Space Command to pilot the military space strategy.
  • The scenario of this simulation starts from a crisis between a State endowed with space capacities and another which has a military assistance agreement with France.
  • An attack against a French military satellite can, for example, block the transmission channels of the armies.

React and respond to attacks against a French satellite in space. This is the objective of the AsterX military space exercise, carried out on Friday from the National Center for Space Studies in Toulouse and in which the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, participates.

Have means of action against attacks in space

The president must then meet the operators of AsterX, who will carry out a simulation of an international space crisis over four days. The scenario of this simulation starts from a crisis between a State endowed with space capacities and another which has a military assistance agreement with France. “We must have the means of action if ever we see that there are dangers weighing on our capacities or those of our allies,” assures the Elysee. An attack against a French military satellite can, for example, block the transmission channels of the armies.

The objective of this exercise, carried out by France with the assistance of several allied countries (Germany, Italy, United States), is to simulate changes in satellite orbit, to plan emergency satellite launches in order to be able to compensate the failure or activation of other satellites, to monitor risky re-entries, namely jamming a signal or temporarily blinding a hostile satellite.

Attacks in space that are already a reality since in 2017, the Russian “spy satellite” Louch-Olympe had tried to approach the Franco-Italian military satellite Athena-Fidus.
