YouTube and Facebook block the accounts of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine

This Friday, Youtube Y Facebook blocked several accounts linked to pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. These platforms took this drastic measure, amid tensions between Moscow and Western countries for fear of a Russian invasion.

Several channels run by the separatist authorities of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic were left inaccessible.

The Lugansk People’s Republic said on its official website that its channels had been blocked “without explanation”.

The Lugansk information center channel was inaccessible on Friday and a message read that “has been terminated for violating YouTube’s community guidelines”.

Other separatist channels carried the same message, including those from the Ministry of Information and the “people’s militia” of the Donetsk stronghold.

On the other hand, Facebook blocked the page of the “people’s militia” from Lugansk, a representative of the self-proclaimed republic told the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

The breakaway regions bordering Russia have been in armed conflict with the Ukrainian army since 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea.

Ukraine and its Western allies accuse Russia of supporting separatists by sending arms and troops across the border, something Moscow denies.
