US reaches 900,000 coronavirus deaths driven by omicron variant

Driven in part by the omicron variant of the coronavirus, the death toll in U.S by COVID-19 reached 900,000 on Friday, less than two months after having exceeded 800,000.

The two-year total, compiled by Johns Hopkins University, is larger than the population of cities like Indianapolis, San Francisco or Charlotte, North Carolina.

The figure was reached after more than 13 months of a vaccination campaign that has been beset by misinformation and political and legal conflicts, even though the vaccines have proven to be safe and highly effective in preventing serious illness and death.

“It is an astronomically high number. If two years ago, when this pandemic was underway, most Americans had been told that 900,000 would die in the next few years, I think most people would not have believed it.”said Dr. Ashish K. Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health.

He noted that most of the deaths occurred after the vaccine was licensed.

“We got the medical science right. We fail in social science. We failed on how to help people get vaccinated, on fighting misinformation, on not politicizing this,” Jha said. “Those are the points where we have failed as the United States.”

Only 64% of the country’s population has completed their vaccination schedule; that is, about 212 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
