UK to send 350 additional soldiers to Poland due to tension in Ukraine

The United Kingdom will send 350 additional soldiers to Poland, its Defense Minister Ben Wallace announced on Monday, to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank in a context of growing tension due to the possibility of a Russian invasion in Ukraine.

These troops will serve to reinforce the contingent of 100 British military engineers that had been sent to the country.

To them, “another 350 British soldiers (…) will be added as a bilateral deployment, to show that we can work together and send a strong signal that the United Kingdom and Poland support each other,” said Wallace, at a joint press conference in London with his Polish counterpart Mariusz Błaszczak.

Fears are growing in that country that a Russian invasion of Ukraine cause a mass exodus of refugees towards its borders.

The new British troops “will cooperate with the Polish armed forces in increasing security, especially when it comes to threats on the border,” Blaszczak told reporters.
