The coronavirus spreads in Tonga, a country that did not register cases until before the volcanic eruption and tsunami

The omicron variant first appeared in Tonga after the volcanic eruption in January, bringing the number of cases of coronavirus covid-19 it rose Thursday to 64, officials said.

Health Minister Saia Piukala indicated that 31 new infections were detected in the last 24 hours, a record number for the island country, which did not have a single active case of the virus when the eruption occurred on January 15.

Piukala said samples sent to Australia confirmed that the contagious omicron variant is spreading in Tonga.

The origin of the infectious outbreak is unknown. coronavirus on the island, although suspicions fall on the ships that deliver aid from countries such as Australia, China, France, Japan and New Zealand, despite the strict sanitary rules for cargo handling.

The country of 100,000 inhabitants remains in confinement and only essential services operate, while shops and schools remain closed.
