Ukraine says there are 20,000 foreign volunteers ready to fight Russia

Nearly 20,000 foreign fighters reported as volunteers to help Ukraine to fight against Russiathe Ukrainian Foreign Minister assured on Sunday.

“Now, the number is close to 20,000. They come mainly from European countries”declared the foreign minister Dmytro Kouleba to the American chain CNN.

According to the official “many people hate Russia” for years but they did not dare to oppose.

“When people saw that the Ukrainians were fighting, that they were not lowering their arms, that encouraged them to join the fight”he added.

Expressing “understanding this need to fight”, the head of Ukrainian diplomacy judged, however, “more important” to get “political, economic and military” assistance from the rest of the world and especially “for air defense”.

Already at the end of February, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky had announced the creation of an “international legion” of foreign fighters to help repel the Russian invasion.

The volunteers were summoned to appear at the Ukrainian embassies in their respective countries.

Denmark gave the green light to its nationals, as well as British Foreign Minister Liz Truss. But the British Army Chief of Staff, Admiral Tony Radakin, said on Sunday that it would be “illegal and pointless” for British citizens to join the fighting in Ukraine.
