Boric will withdraw complaints against protesters of the social outbreak

The Ministries of Interior and Justice of the new Administration in Chilewhich will start walking this weekend, announced this Thursday that they will withdraw 139 complaints against the State Security Law filed in the framework of the social outbreak, which in 2019 led hundreds of thousands of people to protest inequality in the streets from the country.

The decision, announced by the future ministers, Izkia Siches and Marcela Ríos, represents a profound gesture, loaded with symbolism, a few hours after the new president of the country, Gabriel Boric, a young man from the student and social protest movements , receive the sash of the liberator O’Higgins and become the youngest president in the country.

“After joint work, the incoming ministers Izkia Siches and Marcela Ríos announced, as one of the first measures of the Government, the immediate withdrawal of 139 complaints under the State Security Law (LSE) filed within the framework of the social outbreak”, both explain in a statement.

“This measure was a proposal embodied in the government program of President Gabriel Boric and seeks to ensure that the LSE is not used for unfair and disproportionate persecution,” Add.

The note also specifies that “A reparation table will be formed for the victims of human rights violations that will be in charge of the next Undersecretary Haydee Oberreuter.”

“On the other hand, the Ministry of Economy will support micro, small and medium-sized businesses in sectors affected in the context of the demonstrations of the social outbreak, who directly suffered severe damage to their sources of work.”, he highlights.

In that plan, and “as part of the inclusive recovery agenda, resources will be allocated to reactivate the affected neighborhoods and spaces, thus ensuring that they are once again available to undertake. For the Government of President-elect Gabriel Boric, the political will to rebuild trust and move towards social peace is important”, they conclude.

In March 2020, the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) assured that 460 people suffered eye injuries, 35 of them with irreversible loss and 425 eye traumas.

The agency also found that in the more than one hundred days of protest and police repression, more than 2,100 suffered gunshot wounds, 51 of them from bullets, in addition to thousands more who had to be treated for tear gas inhalation.

According to the CIPER journalistic investigation center, at least 77 people are still in prison.
