Explosion in Mexican Caribbean restaurant leaves two dead and 19 injured | VIDEO

An explosion due to a gas leak recorded this Monday in a restaurant in Playa del Carmen, a resort in the Caribbean Mexican near Cancun, left two people dead and 19 injured, authorities reported.

“Emergency teams arrived at the scene to help the victims”reported in a statement the prosecutor’s office of the state of Quintana Roowhere Playa del Carmen is located.

The entity assured that it initiated an investigation folder for the explosion. At the moment, it did not detail the nationality of the victims.

Although the prosecutor’s office had originally reported eight injuries, the local Public Security Secretariat later reported 19 injuries from the explosion.

Cancun and the nearby Caribbean resorts are some of the favorite destinations in Mexico among international tourists.

However, they have been shaken by different violent events for several years. Just over the weekend, a British businessman who lived in Playa del Carmen was shot to death.

On January 26, an Argentine who was the manager of a popular club in Playa del Carmen was killed with two shots to the head.

While on January 21, two Canadians were killed and another was injured in a shooting at a hotel complex near Cancun.

The prosecution of Quintana Roo has pointed out that the majority of these crimes are related to the retail sale of drugs or extortion.

The Mexican Caribbean is one of the main beach destinations in the world. It is also the emblem of tourism in the country, an activity that represents 8.5% of GDP.
