April: In 1982 Argentina occupies the Malvinas Islands

Likewise, this month we remember that in 1972 the Soviet Union canceled the delivery of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Alexander Solzhenitsyn and in 1947 the cerebral Dutch soccer player Johan Cruyff was born.

“Argentina occupied the Malvinas Islands yesterday,” headlined El Comercio to report on the invasion of Argentine troops executed on April 2, 1982 in territories that Buenos Aires always considered under its sovereignty, but that were in the power of Great Britain. During the landing there was resistance from about 80 British sailors. That same afternoon, President Leopoldo Galtieri announced the recovery of the islands amid popular enthusiasm.

Our newspaper announced it on its front page: “The Soviet Union today forced the Swedish Academy to cancel the informal ceremony in Moscow in which the 1970 Nobel Prize for Literature would have been awarded to its winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn.” That same April 4, 1972, the Swedish embassy in the USSR reported that the permanent secretary of the Academy would not receive a visa to travel to the Soviet capital in order to carry out the ceremony.

The helmsman of the “clockwork orange”

Peruvians know Johan Cruyff, the famous number ’14’ of the Dutch team, for having played with Hugo Sotil at the Barcelona club. Cruyff, who was born a April 25, 1947 in Amsterdam, he shone with the Ajax shirt and with the “clockwork orange”, obtaining the subtitle in the 1974 World Cup in Germany. Skilful with both legs, fast and brilliant in his passes, Johan Cruyff was a star of the Catalan club and later also his coach. He is considered among the greats of world football.
