China registers 13,146 new cases of coronavirus, the highest number in two years

China reported on Sunday 13,146 local cases of covid-19the highest figure in two years, while the contagious omicron variant spreads throughout the country, reported the National Health Commission (CNS).

There were 1,455 patients with symptoms (…) 11,691 asymptomatic cases (…) and no deaths reported”, the Chinese CNS said in a statement.

In the financial hub of Shanghai, the epicenter of the country’s most severe coronavirus outbreak, nearly all of its 25 million people were under lockdown on Saturday in an effort to contain the spread.

The restrictions in Shanghai threaten to affect the supply chain. Shipping giant Maersk said on Friday that some warehouses in the city remain closed and trucking services could be hit by the lockdown.

China, where the virus was first detected coronavirus in 2019, it is one of the last countries to follow a zero covid policy, with strict restrictive measures to eradicate even the smallest outbreak.
