The government of Venezuela rejected on Thursday the decision taken by the countries of the UN to suspend Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council for the abuses committed during its invasion of Ukraineas reported by Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia.

“As a founding member of the Organization of United Nationsthe Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its commitment to the principles and mandate of its Founding Charter, and rejects the decision to suspend Russia of the Human Rights Council of the UN”, the foreign minister wrote on his Twitter account.

The General Assembly of the UN approved the initiative promoted by Washington with 93 votes in favor, 24 against and 58 abstentions, easily exceeding the necessary two-thirds majority, given that only the “if it is” and the “It is not”.

Russia is the second country suspended from the Human Rights Council since it was created in 2006. Until now, the only precedent was the exclusion of Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya in response to the repression of the 2011 protests.
