Suspect in New York subway shooting will be tried for “terrorism” and could receive life in prison

The authorities of New York confirmed the arrest this Wednesday of the alleged perpetrator of yesterday’s shooting at a subway station, identified as Frank James and who risks a life sentence if found guilty.

James was arrested shortly after noon in the south area of Manhattanspecifically in the East Village neighborhood, between First Avenue and Saint Mark Place, reported the New York Police

Before the police spoke, the mayor Eric Adams -confined at home by covid-19- connected by Zoom and proclaimed: “We have it. We have it”.

The subject, who did not resist, risks a life sentence for carrying out a terrorist-type armed attack on a public means of transport, explained for his part New York Attorney General Breon Peace.

Frank James acquired the gun with which he fired the shots in 2011 in Ohio, clarified the Police; Yesterday, with that weapon, he fired 33 shots and wounded ten people with bullets, apparently fired at random, until the weapon jammed and he left the scene.

Jameswho was very active on YouTube where he had a channel where he spread his conspiracy theories and racial hatred, He was off the radar for thirty hours -despite his image being broadcast yesterday afternoon throughout the country-.

Hundreds of New York police, federal police and even counterterrorism units actively searched for James in Brooklyn and Manhattan after the attack.

The 62-year-old individual (although he claims to be 63) had already been arrested nine times in New York between 1992 and 1998 and three other times in neighboring New Jersey, although the Federal Police (FBI) denied having him among their files of suspects.

There is so far no sign of the reasons that led James to carry out this attack, although in a video he had recently recorded he said that he was “full of hate and full of rage.”

Apparently, and according to various media reports today, James suffered from some kind of mental illness that kept him hospitalized in specialized medical centers, an experience that he later described as “terrifying”.
