Uruguay: Lynch a man accused of robbery in Montevideo

A group of people chased and lynched a neighbor this weekend who they accused of robbery in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Montevideo, local media reported and the prosecution confirmed on Monday.

The event occurred on Saturday in the Lezica neighborhood, in the northwest of the Uruguayan capital. Around 9:00 p.m. local time, the police received a call to report the incident.

Upon arrival at the scene, the police found a seriously injured 25-year-old man, who was taken to the Saint Bois hospital, in the same neighborhood, where he was admitted with “multiple stab wounds, two of them in abdominal pneumothorax” and died in the early hours of Sunday.

According to several testimonies collected by local media, the victim was chased by a group of neighbors who accused him of a robbery.

The young man was overtaken by the group, who lynched him with home-made white weapons and an iron rod wrapped in cloth. The victim also had a gunshot wound to the arm.

Police have so far not arrested any suspects in the lynching.
