Alina Kabaeva: UK includes Vladimir Putin’s alleged partner in sanctions

The British Minister of Foreign Affairs, Liz Truss, announced this Friday new sanctions that affect the economy of relatives and friends of the Russian president, Vladimir Putinincluding his alleged partner Alina Kabaeva, whom he rewarded “with positions of status and wealth in exchange for loyalty.”

In a statement, the Foreign Office -Ministry of Foreign Affairs- indicates that despite the fact that Putin has registered “modest assets” in the official records, such as a small apartment in Saint Petersburg, two vehicles from the 50s or a small garage, “Putin actually relies on his network of family, childhood friends and a select elite who have benefited from his rule and, in return, support his lifestyle.”

The new sanctions will “hit” those who owe Putin their wealth and power and, in return, support him and his war machine, the note indicates.

“We are exposing and attacking the murky web that underpins Putin’s lavish lifestyle, tightening the screws on his inner circle,” Truss said.

The minister added that the London Executive will continue “imposing sanctions on all those who help and are complicit in Putin’s aggression until Ukraine prevails.”

Some of those sanctioned today include retired Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva, who has a close relationship with the Russian president and who holds the position of Chairman of the Board of the National Media Group, the country’s largest private media company.

There is also Anna Zatseplina, grandmother of Alina Kabaeva and associate of Genadi Timchenko, an associate of Putin; Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, Putin’s ex-wife; President Igor Putin’s cousin, director of the Pechenga International Seaport.

Businessman Mikhail Putin, deputy chairman of the Board of Management of the SOGAZ insurer and deputy chairman of the Board of Managers of Gazprom is also on the list.
