Ruling Social Democratic Party approves Sweden’s entry into NATO

The Social Democratic Party, to which the government of Swedengave his approval this Sunday to a candidacy for the NATOwhich will allow the Executive to present a request for accession together with Finland.

During an extraordinary meeting held this Sunday, the management decided that the formation would “collaborate in a Swedish candidacy for NATO”, the Social Democrats indicated in a statement that showed a shift in their position.

The party specifies that it opposes the installation of permanent NATO bases and nuclear weapons on Swedish territory, what is not required to join the alliance.

An internal consultation revealed the divisions within the party, with critical voices denouncing in particular a very hasty decision to continue the Finnish calendar.

But the authorization of the party leadership is still awaited.

The Prime Minister and head of the party, Magdalena Andersonwill give a press conference on this in the afternoon in Stockholm.

With the change of party line, a clear pro-NATO majority is guaranteed in Parliament.

The right was already in favor of joining the alliance and the extreme right of the Sweden Democrats (SD) is in favor if it is done jointly with Finland.

Finland announced on Sunday its “historic” candidacy to join the NATOwhich will be submitted to the Finnish Parliament on Monday.
