Mexico: ‘El Mara’, alleged murderer of journalists Sheila Johana García and Yesenia Mollinedo, is arrested in Veracruz

Mexican authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of a person suspected of being involved in the double murder of journalists Yesenia Mollinedo Falconi and Sheila Johana García, who were killed on May 9 in the eastern state of Veracruz.

The Attorney General of the State of Veracruz reported the arrest of an individual identified as Antonio de Jesús “N”, alias “The Mara”, whom they point out as allegedly responsible for the crime of qualified intentional homicide.

On its Twitter account, the Justice Prosecution Agency reported that it was ministerial agents, together with elements of the National Anti-Kidnapping Coordination, who complied with an arrest warrant.

The detainee is considered allegedly responsible for the crime of Mollinedo Falconidirector of the portal El Veraz, and of Garcia Oliveraa reporter for the same media outlet, murdered in the municipality of Cosoleacaque, in the south of the state of Veracruz.

The detainee will be presented at an initial hearing before the trial judge and oral criminal procedure so that his legal situation can be defined; that is, it is determined if the arrest is legal and, subsequently, if he is prosecuted.

After the crime, the Mexican authorities revealed that they were following four lines of investigation, two of them related to the first indications that arose at the scene of the events.

Another one has to do with the activity carried out by the victims in the electronic medium, and the fourth is related to the leaking of some audios.

With Mollinedo and García, there would be eleven journalists killed in Mexico so far this yearif it is proven that their deaths occurred in connection with their work, according to national organizations of journalists.

However, the Secretary of Security of the Government of Mexico It only recognizes 9 cases this year, with 19 alleged perpetrators detained or wanted, and 16 linked to criminal proceedings.

According to figures from the organization Article 19, since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came to power in December 2018, there have been 1,945 attacks against the press in the country, including 33 murders, and 2 disappearances, 85% more than in the first triennium of President Enrique Peña Nieto.
