Cases of “suspected” monkeypox rise to six in Brazil

The Ministry of Health of Brazil reported this Saturday that it analyzes four other “suspicious” cases of monkey poxwith which there are already six patients who are under medical surveillance for this disease, of which there is still no confirmed patient in the country.

This same week, the health authorities had reported that there were two people suspected of having contracted this disease and that they were “Isolated, recovering and under strict medical surveillance”, pending the results of the respective laboratory tests.

The first two suspicions were registered in the state of Ceará (northeast) and in Santa Catarina (south), but this Saturday the number of patients with symptoms rose to six, with others detected in Mato Grosso do Sul (center), Rio Grande do Sul (south) and Rondonia, in the west and where there are two patients.

The case registered in Rio Grande do Sul was already analyzed, but had not yet been included among those considered “suspicious”, because it was low “research”, according to the Ministry of Health.

The only thing that is known about this patient is that he is a man who arrived from Portugal last week, which completely rules out any possible relationship with Argentina, a country bordering Rio Grande do Sul and which has already confirmed that He has been the first patient of this disease in Latin America.

Faced with suspicions of monkeypox, the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) of Brazil has recommended resuming prevention measures applied due to the coronavirus pandemic and relaxed in recent months after the Government repealed the “state of emergency” declared by the covid-19 crisis.

Among other proposals, Anvisa suggested that the use of masks and social distancing at airports and flights be resumed.

Also due to this disease, the Ministry of Health has installed a “situation room” to monitor the evolution of the national and international epidemiological picture.
