The President of Paraguay travels to the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles

The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, traveled this Tuesday to the city of Los Angeles (USA), to participate in the IX Summit of the Americaswith the fight against organized crime and the search for investments among its priorities.

Abdo Benítez left on a private flight from the presidential breakwater of the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (which serves Asunción), accompanied by his wife, Silvana López Moreira.

Consulted by journalists at the airport, the Minister of the Interior, Federico González, anticipated that the Paraguayan leader will speak about the fight against transnational organized crime.

“It is one of the most important issues that concerns all presidents and, therefore, of course he is going to talk about this at this summit,” he said.

Without specifying details, he anticipated that Abdo Benítez will hold formal and informal meetings with his colleagues from the continent.

On June 2, Abdo Benítez assured that he will present his country in this conclave as a “strategic place for investment”.

Also part of the official delegation are, among others, the general director of the State Ceremonial, Julio César Echagüe, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Julio Arriola, who is already in US territory.

The Paraguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Arriola met on Tuesday with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro.

The United States confirmed this Monday that it did not invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to the Los Angeles summit due to the situation of democracy and human rights in those three nations.

Among the other absentees are the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who had already warned that he would not go to the summit in case there were exclusions, and his Bolivian counterpart, Luis Arce.

Also the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and his Uruguayan counterpart, Luis Lacalle Pou, the latter after testing positive for covid-19.
