Colombia faced massive demonstrations in 2021, led by young people, against the government policies of conservative President Iván Duque. It was an unpopular tax reform that, although it was withdrawn, was the spark that fueled two months of sustained protests against inequality, unemployment and violence. After the ceremonial act, Petro He will attend the first joint meeting with President Duque, who will hand over power on August 7.

Petro seeks to promote a “national agreement” to seek consensus on the reforms required by the State in political, social and economic matters, although it has not detailed how it will be carried out. The president-elect assured upon receiving the credential that he invited his former campaign contender, Rodolfo Hernández, to the dialogue, who obtained 47% of the votes in the ballot.

Petro He assured that he also summoned his staunchest opponent, former President Álvaro Uribe, who governed between 2002 and 2010 and continues to be in force in the country’s politics; he is Duque’s political godfather and leads the conservative Democratic Center party.

However, he assured that it will be a broad dialogue with all sectors of the population, including businessmen and elites, to whom he said during the campaign that he was going to raise taxes to finance his ambitious social plan.
